A summer of music – The festivals and concerts in Emilia-Romagna 2017

Emilia Romagna has much to tell us, and when it does so with music, listening to it is even more enjoyable both for our ears and our heart.

During the summer, this region is at its peak, and its musical waves will go all along the Via Emilia from north to south, in an explosion of genres to be enjoyed in the pleasant evening hours of summer, by the sea, in the cool air of the higher altitudes on the inland hills, and in the clubs and famous locations for gathering and enjoying music.

Let yourself be taken away by these waves which start at the Val Tidone Festival, the traveling musical festival in and around Piacenza. The festival will stop at castles, villas, buildings and squares and the most suggestive corners of Val Tidone, from Piacenza to the smaller towns, and it will host the International Music Competitions of the valley as well as many world famous musicians. Until November 25.

June kicks things off with A River of Music in Ferrara, Thursday, June 1, to then continue on the entire month every Thursday until July 27. The section of the dock in front of Palazzo Savonuzzi will be transformed into a square on the river thanks to musical aperitifs where teachers of the Scuola di Musica Moderna - Associazione Musicisti of Ferrara will perform. After the tasty aperitif, there will be Nena b-side with some nighttime music.

I we stay in the area of Ferrara and follow the smell of sea water we will find the Comacchio Beach Festival on June 2 and 3. The opening event of the summer season at the Lidi di Comacchio will welcome artists of international fame such as Antonello Venditti, Paola Turci, Mario Venuti, Sergio Sylvestre, Deborah Iurato, Giovanni Caccamo, Alice Paba, Matthew Lee, Bouchra, Andrea D'Alessio, and Eva. Singers in concert but also DJ sets with Lelio Morra, JSP, Mr Chryss Coketo and Kensi Klock for a big bang beginning to the season.

Until June 4 the rhythm continues in the squares and streets, churches and museums, courtyards and clubs at Imola in Music. Here the music ranges from classic to folk, pop, rock, blues, from gospel to ethnic, opera, sacred music and jazz not to mention curious and fascinating combinations of genres. This event will be enriched by exhibitions, guided tours, food and other events going on all day.

From beach to beach the waves take us to Beaches Brew Festival in Marina di Ravenna, four days of international music with many groups coming from the famous Dutch concert agency Belmont Bookings. June 5-8.

Back again this year is the event Music in the Castle. 36 events with shows, concerts, chats with writers and musicians, words and music with actors, comics, artists and sports champions, which will be held in extraordinary places - fortresses, castles, historic parks, church porches and cloisters, ancient courtyards - of the areas in and around Parma, Piacenza, Reggio Emilia and Cremona. June 4 - August 26.

Also downtown Rimini will be hit with music at "Percuotere la Mente" (Pummel your Mind). From Great Britain to the United States, passing through Italian traditions with crossovers into folk and indie rock, there are seven events in the setting of the Corte degli Agostiniani. The prologue is with Cat Power, then Le Luci della Centrale Elettrica, The Divine Company, Billy Brag and Radical Face. There will also be tributes to the Italian singer-songwriter from Genoa, the eternal Battisti. June 7, July 4, 12, 25, 30 and August 6, 24.

Fans of American hard rock from the '80s and '90s will not miss the big concert at the Autodromo Enzo e Dino Ferrari in Imola of Guns N' Roses, on June 10. The only Italian date, this concert is part of the band’s European "Not in This Lifetime Tour".

In Emilia-Romagna, music can be heard also at the opera, and the Teatro Comunale of Bologna offers us "Lucia di Lammermoor", an opera in three acts by Gaetano Donizetti, with shows during the second half of June. June 16, 17, 18, 20, 21, 22, 23, and 25.

In Ferrara the top summer event is Sotto le stelle. This festival, in the heart of Piazza Castello and in the Cortile d’Onore of the Castello Estense, will look at all kinds of indie music with concerts that only play here in Italy. Musicians such as Agnes Obel, ALT-J and The Lemon Twigs, and Fleet Foxes will only perform here. June 20, 28 and July 3, 6, 19, 27.

Emilia Romagna loves good things and when music is combined with wine in Zola Predosa, Zola Jazz&Wine is born, an event dedicated to good wine and great jazz among the grapevines and hills of Bologna. The choice ranges from a concert amongst the vines at sunset, on July 1, to two concerts in the well known spaces of Villa Edvige Garagnani and Palazzo Albergati, on June 30 and on July 2, with the Rimini Swing Band, the Organ Trio and the Cal Trio 2.0, respectively. There will be space also for revisitations of blues songs, classic dixie tunes and covers of songs by the likes of Thelonious Monk, Duke Ellington, Don Cherry, and Bill Evans, all paired with tastings in a perfect combination.

The month of July makes its triumphant entrance at Modena Park with the huge concert of Vasco Rossi, already sold out for a world record of tickets and participating in a show that, as seen in the acoustic tests on June 29 reserved for 10-15.000 people, will bring together up to 220,000 spectators. No panic for those who were not lucky enough to grab a ticket: for the occasion, Rimini will set up a maxi screen to watch this artist perform just a short distance from the sea. July 1.

Rock stays near Modena with the Notte Bianca del Rock in Sestola, a night of special expos and many musical groups including, direct from the USA, the legendary Kiss. July 15.

Offering another chance to dive into the sea is Bellaria Igea Marina which will welcome us "On the Sand" to enjoy this musical concert series right by the sea. Pop, indie and alternative rock, especially Italian groups, will be offered by Niccolò Fabi, Levante and Moorcheeba, on stage July 14, 21, and 27, respectively.
