May by bike. Cycling events in Romagna.

Warm weather brings with it great opportunities to take advantage of the mild temperatures and enjoy nature and the outdoors. For those who love biking, in May the place to be is Emilia-Romagna, which will become the homeland of cycling.

The entire month will be marked by the Giro d'Italia, a cycling race known worldwide which this year celebrates its 100th edition. Since that morning on May 13, 1909, 99 editions have gone by and become a journey through the history of our country and a reference point of the sports era. The race, made up of 21 legs with the starting point in Alghero on May 5 and the arrival in Milano on May  28, as it goes up the boot, on May 18 there will be the 12th leg from Forlì to Reggio Emilia, for a total of 237 km. From here, on May 19 there will be the 13th leg Reggio Emilia - Tortona, for a total of 162 km. During the two days, the squares in Reggio Emilia will host the "Race Villages", spaces dedicated to sponsors and sports equipment.

On the Riviera the first event is in Cattolica and Gabicce Mare with the Granfondo of Sharks on May 13 and 14. There are two routes, one is 145 km long, with a 2400 meter slope, and a shorter one 80 km long, with a slope of 1250 meters. The departure is from the Aquarium of Cattolica at 8:00am with an arrival in Gabicce Monte, where you can admire a breathtaking panorama of the Adriatic Riviera of Romagna and the Marche, immersed in the Natural Park of Monte San Bartolo. Once you have arrived in Gabicce Monte there will be the highly anticipated moment of the “Maxi Ristoro” with a tasty barbecue of blue fish and Romagna piadina from the vantage point called the "balcony of the Adriatic".

Our journey on two wheels continues, arriving in Cesenatico, home of landscapes famous for the sea on the horizon, the rolling hills, lush pinewoods and the unmistakeable smell of salt.

On Sunday, May 21, the legendary Nove Colli” , now in its 47th edition, returns and is a must for those who love cycling. The race has also become the occasion for several exhibitions and events of great interest which liven up the weekend and involve not only fans and competitors, but also a wide audience of spectators and friends who use this opportunity to go sunbathing and taste the dishes of the famous local fish cuisine.

The competition starts from the Canal Port of Cesenatico at 6am on a route that from the coast leads to the hinterland hills. This is the most participated-in cycling tourism event in Europe, loved by both professionals and amateurs who want to experience the thrill of a regulation race both in intensity and difficulty, which everyone takes on as they wish and to the best of their ability. This is a race of 210 kilometers that includes going over nine hills, where the route gets its name. This route also has an alternative 130 km version for amateur bikers who are just a bit “lazy”. Among the unmissable events at the end of the race this year, worth mentioning are the Pasta Party for everyone and, new in 2017, the “Brumotti Show” with this famous Italian television star and champion of Italian bike trials.

Among biking enthusiasts and those who love to experience competitions and landscapes with the wind in their face, the “Nove Colli” is the starting point for many other initiatives dedicated to bicycles which will make Cesenatico “the two wheel temple”.

Before the Nove Colli, on May 19th and 20th, on Cesenatico’s Promenade, the suggestive setting of Piazza Costa will hostCiclo & Vento”, the international cycling showcase where, at about 80 stands, the latest technological and mechanical innovations of the most prestigious bike brands can be found, with a lot of space dedicated to accessories, dietetic products, dietary supplements, and sportswear. There will also be stands with cycling coaches to offer advice to the cyclists and amateurs, and performances of a very high caliber. With more than 30,000 visitors every year, this festival has become one of the most important two-wheel shows in Europe.

On Saturday, May 20th and Sunday, May 21st, the Nove Colli route is done not only by bike but also on foot. The starting line is at noon along the port canal in Via Armellini, for the Nove Colli Running”, a 200 kilometer foot race along the same route of the cycling race. And at 6 pm there will be the start of the 9th edition of the “Brevetto A.C.P. Randoneé by Night Memorial Dario Beltrambini", a nighttime amateur cycling-tourism event, again on the same route as the Nove Colli, with the finish on Sunday morning, on May 21.

At 3:30pm in Piazza Marconi the 6th edition of the Mini Granfondo Nove Colli, a bike ride over two routes, one 10.2 km long and the other 5.2 km, will begin for kids ages 7 to 14.

For the occasion of the “Nove Colli”, Cesenatico will offer special packages and amazing deals dedicated to all two wheel fans and their companions with great prices.

The world of two wheels has arrived… are you ready to race?
