Verdi vacation for the Bicentenary of the Swan of Busseto

In 2013, Emilia Romagna will celebrate one of its most loved sons, Giuseppe Verdi, the most well known opera writer in the world, in the year of the bicentenary of his birth (he was born in Roncole di Busseto on October 10, 1813).

To celebrate the “swan” of Busseto (a nickname given to him for the elegance and delicate nature of his musical style) as he should be, among the various events, there is the “Cartellone Verdi 200 digitale”, a calendar of Verdi works which can be seen in some of the most beautiful and historical theaters of the region, but which can also be enjoyed with live streaming, for free, on the website www.giuseppeverdi.it.

Not only that, but the shows will be broadcast in “simulcast” (shown at the same time in various locations), for free, in various places throughout the region - municipal theaters, libraries, abroad, and at Italian Institutes of Culture and Associations - offering the chance to enjoy the works on schedule for free and thus reaching a wider audience.

The calendar "Verdi 200 Digital Program" currently has, from March to the end of the year, about twelve works, which will bring the most famous of Verdi's operas to the stage, from La Traviata to Nabucco, as well as Trovatore, Rigoletto, Macbeth not to mention the “Messa da Requiem per soli coro e orchestra” and “Quattro pezzi sacri”.

Besides the live streaming of the shows, the site www.giuseppeverdi.it offers throughout the year live coverage and video of the many events dedicated to Verdi, from musical contests to presentations and interviews, and it will also offer multimedia content, from musical files to backstage looks at shows, taken from the archives of theaters, associations and musical entities in the region.

Also on this site it is possible to download a special app, for smartphones and tablets, which, besides constantly updating you on the next Verdi show on the calendar, offers tourist information and package deals for those who wish to plan a weekend of full immersion in the places of Verdi, from the Teatro Regio in Parma to the Birth House of Giuseppe Verdi in Roncole, as well as the Teatro Verdi in Busseto and the Salone Barezzi, where this maestro held his first concert.

And if you would like to enjoy even more the atmosphere surrounding this famous composer, an absolute must is a food and wine visit to taste his favorite foods, from Culatello di Zibello to homemade tortelli filled with herbs with Lambrusco, from the Spalla di San Secondo (a rare specialty made from the boneless shoulder of a pig, original to the town near Parma from which it gets its name) to the Spongata (an ancient Christmas sweet made in Emilia, made from dough and filled with dried fruit, cookies, spices and honey), all of which should obviously be accompanied by a good glass of wine from the area around Parma.

A special brochure offers the calendar of all the operas on schedule in the theaters of the region and the vacation deals for a true melodic weekend, with music, culture and good food. Special packages are also available on the site of Città d'Arte.
