Peasant Feast, with lighting of bonfires, float parade and fireworks

Historic center and surroundings

Rocca San Casciano (FC)

Preparations are underway for the Bonfire Festival, in San Casciano, a charming medieval village in the heart of ancient Romagna-Toscana.
The two antagonistic districts, Borgo and Mercato, will battle in the exciting challenge of two very tall bonfires of over 25 meters, enriched by beautiful masks and a parade of large floats.
Along the opposite banks of the Montone river in the midst of the two fierce supporters, Saturday, April 27, the majestic hay piles, more than 8 meters high and made of Scotch broom, will burn.
The origin of this festival is lost in time; there are those who trace it back to pagan rituals, in particular to the Celtic ones. It is said that since the XII century bonfires were lit along the banks of the Montone river following frequent floods in that period, to calm the waters.
From 1700 in the courtyards of each district a bonfire was lit and around it people ate, drank and danced until dawn. Today, however, there are only two fires representing the two main districts of the town, Borgo and Mercato.
