Baricella is located in the Bologna's plain along via San Donato and is the last town before entering Ferrara’s province.

Why visit it

Once a crossroads for trade with the neighboring territory of Ferrara, Baricella offers visitors precious hints of its past as well as interesting marks of its natural environment.

Don't miss

The Church of Santa Maria di Baricella contains a valuable 17th-century wooden crucifix.

The oratory of San Marco, or Zucchini Chapel, is a funerary chapel with extraordinary decorations in the neo-medieval Art Nouveau style of the Aemilia Ars, the group of Bolognese artists and artisans led by the architect Alfonso Rubbiani.

The Church of Santa Maria Laurentana, located in the hamlet of Boschi, contains a beautiful wooden Madonna clothed in fabrics from the era of its 17th-century original construction.

On the table

The dishes of Baricella’s cuisine are the same that made Bologna famous: tagliatelle, tortellini, lasagna, passatelli, zuppa imperiale, different types of boiled meat, roasts, cured meats. In addition, Baricella is well known for baked desserts, for example the typical Pane di Natale (Christmas bread).

Significant appointments

On the 3rd weekend of October, Baricella celebrates the "Fire di sdazz", the ancient fair of sieves, household tools that were once used to sift flour, in order to conserve it during wintertime and to make bread. The fair is an opportunity to taste the great local food: from the classical first courses alla Bolognese, to the salsiccia (sausage) and finally the desserts, such as mistocchine and castagnacci made of chestnut flour, raviole filled with mostarda jam and brazadèla (donut) dipped in red wine.

In the surroundings

The Ecological Rebalancing Oasis created by the Municipality on the land of the Royal Spanish College, is a wetland area of the plain with large meadows interspersed with tree scrub, visitor paths and lookout towers. The Oasis is home to numerous species of birds and also to the rare pond turtle.

Near the town of San Gabriele you can see the church of Santa Maria del Corniolo, which preserves some sixteenth-century decorations and an interesting fragment with floral and anthropomorphic motifs. Experts believe it the intervention of the painter Amico Aspertini, who worked in the same years in the Rocca Isolani in Minerbio.

At Passo Segni there is a characteristic Bailey Bridge over the Reno river that connects the metropolitan area of Bologna with the province of Ferrara. Built in the post-war period, the iron bridge with its typical modular elements has recently been restored and is now accessible.
