San Piero in Bagno

Located in the valley floor along the Savio River and the Great Communication Road E/45, this town is the most important center and the capital of the municipality, with construction, forestry, metallurgical and clothing industries and a good network of services, restaurants, hotels, leisure and sport facilities.

Why visit it

Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, the town received an elegant imprint from the eclectic work of the Florentine architect Cesare Spighi, who designed and built the parish church, the school building, the monumental cemetery, and the Rivalta Paganelli palace.

The well-preserved historic center can be enjoyed with a short walk that allows you to appreciate the two eighteenth-century bridges over the Savio and the Rio, the airy square where the crowded "weekly market" takes place, enclosed by elegant seventeenth-eighteenth-century buildings, also widespread along the streets where, merging with bourgeois residences and minute buildings, they create an urban fabric with a Tuscan imprint.

In this context, the parish church, the school building and the municipal headquarters, built between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, are integrated with the local stone that pairs with the brick.

When to go and what to see

The village, which can be visited all year round, is connected to the pretty spa town of Bagno di Romagna also by the easy cycle-pedestrian path which becomes an outdoor gym for everyone, residents and tourists.

On the table

From the contamination between Romagna and Tuscany a truly unique recipe was born, which can be tasted only in this area, the "Basotti", that is a particular type of tagliolini cooked in the oven together with the broth.
Also typical are the "tortelli alla lastra" and the "raviggiolo", the freshest cheese presided over by Slow Food.
These flavors can be tasted at local restaurants including prestigious and family-run trattorias that also offer ancient and delicious recipes based on mushrooms, truffles, game and chestnuts.

Keeping fit

The network of trails in the Val di Bagno Trek, extended for over 200 km, is the natural gym for hikers and mountain bikers.

In the surroundings

Just outside the town of San Piero in Bagno, going up the round hill for about 2 kilometers, you reach Corzano, a place where nature, history and religion harmonize.
Here are the remains of a castle (sections of the polygonal curtain wall, cistern, foundations of the fortress), and a small, low and elegant sanctuary, enlarged during the nineteenth century to venerate an image of the "Madonna and Child", depicted in a fresco of the fifteenth century and also today intensely venerated by the population, especially on the holidays dedicated to it (Divine Mercy Sunday in April and the last Sunday in August). The place can also be reached on foot via the medieval mule track.

The ancient route about 1 km long - marked by 14 large bronze stations of the Via Crucis (1990) by the Sampieran artist Carmelo Puzzolo, identical to those made by him for the Mount of Apparitions of the Shrine of Medjiugorje - has been completely rebuilt and restored by the local association "Il Faro di Corzano".

From the main square, the heart of the town, going up for about 12 kilometers, you can reach the small town of Rio Salso on a spur where nature dominates, full of paths and mule tracks that lead to the nearby Casentino Forest National Park, towards Monte Falterona and Campigna and towards the suggestive Bidente valley of Pietrapazza.

Crossing the town of San Piero in Bagno, a few kilometers away you come to a small, winding municipal road to the small hamlet of Montegranelli, a round hill from which you can enjoy a superb panorama of the upper Savio valley and the surrounding mountains. The small village is made up of houses grouped around the ruins of a castle that belonged to the Guidi counts.

Furthermore, following the SP 138, in the direction of Cesena, you reach San Silvestro, another small municipal hamlet made up of a few clustered houses around the parish church. Here there are valuable works of art to which the 180 inhabitants refer, scattered in the many farms of the fertile surrounding countryside.
